Japanese Address System

Japanese addresses are fundamentally different from Western systems. Instead of street names, locations are identified by nested geographic areas: prefecture (to/do/fu/ken), city/ward (shi/ku), neighborhood (cho/machi), block number (chome), sub-block (ban), and building number (go). Most streets in Japan have no names at all.

Japan Post uses a 7-digit postal code (format: XXX-XXXX) that is remarkably precise. In many urban areas, a single postal code covers just a handful of buildings. The combination of postal code and block/building number is often sufficient for delivery.

Challenges for International Systems

Japanese addresses present major challenges for international platforms: the reading order reverses (largest to smallest unit), street names are absent, character encoding must handle kanji, hiragana, katakana, and romaji, and apartment building naming conventions differ from Western norms. Japan is the world's fourth-largest e-commerce market, making proper Japanese address handling essential for any global commerce platform.
